EINDHOVEN

Destination The Netherlands: Why Not Choose… Eindhoven?

A dynamic city, where art, design and culture are essential elements of life, Eindhoven also has a rich historical past. Discover a city strongly attached to its roots, but also drawn to modernity and high-technology, making it one of the most interesting places in Holland.

Great Charm and Great Design

Start your exploration of the city on foot. Stroll along Bergstraat, Willemstraat and Kerkstraat, some of the prettiest boutique-filled streets, or enjoy a pleasant afternoon shopping in the triangle formed by Kleine Berg, Grote Berg and Bergstraat. On Wilhelmina Square, relax with your favourite drink in one of the traditional "brown cafés", for an authentic experience. Then, as evening falls, head for Stratumseind: the longest and liveliest street in the city!

But Eindhoven also has many other pleasant neighbourhoods, cosy cafés and unbelievable vibes. If you love painting, you'll be in paradise: the Van Abbemuseum, one of the best modern and contemporary art museums in Europe, contains works by major artists such as Picasso, Chagall, Kandinsky, El Lissitzky, Theo van Doesburg, Mondriaan and Appel.

A true pillar of the city's history, electronics company Philips has been doing its country proud for over a hundred years. Visit the Philips Museum to find out about the past of this giant, its revolutionary contributions, and its major role in Eindhoven's story. Be sure to make time for the unmissable Evoluon, a UFO-shaped building erected by Philips right in the city centre. Another of Eindhoven's major sites connected to the electronics giant is the Strijp-S, a design and creative space on the group's old site.

Holland is truly the land of design, and has produced some of the most talented designers in the world. You mustn't miss the Design House, which offers the best design exhibitions, or the Design Academy Eindhoven, reputed to be the world's best design academy. Another of the city's architectural wonders is the Blob: a futuristic building, which with its natural lines in glass and steel has become a key landmark and meeting point.

If you have time to venture further afield, the province of North Brabant is well worth visiting. Children will love the Efteling amusement park, whilst history, architecture and culture enthusiasts will adore the cities of Breda and 's-Hertogenbosch. Alternatively, visit Zundert to see the Vincent van Gogh House.

Finally, for nature lovers, the Zoom-Kalmthoutse Heide national park is a beautiful place for walking or cycling, with heathland as far as the eye can see.

Stratumseind: Eindhoven's longest street. It is also the city's (and maybe even they country's) biggest party street. With around ten restaurants and about fifty bars, it is a great place for a night out.

The Van Abbemuseum: created in 1936, this museum mainly focuses on modern and contemporary art. Its collections include works by Picasso, Kandinsky, Lissitzky and Rodin. The building's architecture is just as impressive as the immense collection of art inside.

The Philips Museum: this museum tells the story of the company, from its beginnings to the most recent technological innovations. In other words, from the first carbon filament bulbs, to the very latest lighting systems.

The Evoluon: marvel at the modern and elegant lines of this amazing building, originally the science and technology museum, and now a centre for conferences and various events.

Strijp-S: be inspired by the creative atmosphere of this constantly buzzing neighbourhood. In the old buildings of the Philips company, artists, designers, actors and musicians exhibit their work. Seeing this area, it's easy to understand why Eindhoven is one of the most creative cities in Holland.

The Design House: discover this unique meeting place for design and innovation, a showcase for industries, businesses and creative institutions.

The Design Academy Eindhoven: this academy founded in 1947 teaches several disciplines: art, architecture, graphic design and industrial design. Visit during Dutch Design Week to see its students' best work.

The Blob: this futuristic building on 18 September Square is the work of Italian architect Massimiliano Fuksas. Standing 25m tall, it is just as surprising inside as it is outside.

The Vincent van Gogh House in Zundert: visit the house where Vincent van Gogh was born and raised. Find out about the artist's childhood and take a bike ride to admire the landscapes that inspired him.

's-Hertogenbosch: discover this lovely city with its many historical buildings, interesting museums, pleasant shops, and welcoming bars and restaurants. Admire the mediaeval architecture, take a river boat trip, or cycle along the ramparts. Whatever you choose, you're in for a wonderful day.

Unique Regional Flavours

North Brabant is reputed to be Holland's top gourmet region, and has plenty of tasty experiences in store for you. In spring, the province is filled with its three signature products: asparagus, strawberries and anchovies. From May to July, there is ample opportunity to try delicious dishes that will help you rediscover these delicious ingredients.

And for the foodies among you, Anna Royal Dutch caviar is produced at the country's only caviar farm, from the sturgeons that swim in Eindhoven's basins. A unique regional delicacy, from an exceptional Dutch province.

Cultural Events

27 April: King's Day. For this occasion, the whole country wears cheerful orange clothes in celebration of its monarch. There are jumble and bric-a-brac sales, and all each bar sets up a beer pump outside. In Eindhoven, the festivities start on the evening of the 26th, with concerts in many squares.

June: E-Moves. This festival presents Eindhoven's dynamic youth culture: hip-hop, breakdance, skateboarding and BMX, graffiti and street art. It is the largest urban festival in Holland. Artists from around the world give shows, demonstrations and workshops.

October: Dutch Design Week. This is the largest annual design event in the Netherlands. For nine days, some 300 events take place at 60 different sites, attracting over 150,000 visitors.

November: GLOW Eindhoven. For this light festival, dozens of artists from all over the world give Eindhoven city centre a makeover with their light installations.
